Mental training

What is mental skills training?

Whether you're tackling your first 10k road race or training for international competition, you can benefit from strengthening your mental toughness.

Mental skills training builds empirically tested and proven techniques into your physical training and racing plans, so you can perform at your best and reach your full potential. Many clients find these skills transfer well beyond sport, into other parts of their lives.

Is it right for me?

If you want to improve your training quality and performance, yes. Many athletes assume mental skills training is something you do when things are going wrong. It isn't. The skills you learn will help during difficult times, but the focus is on helping you train and perform to the best of your ability.

You're already committed to the physical and technical side of your sport. Developing your mental toughness lets you get the most out of that effort.

What can I expect?

No two athletes are the same, so every program is customized. It starts with a one-on-one consultation about your background and goals: your competition level, your biggest successes and challenges, and your mental game strengths and areas to improve.

From there we build a mental skills training plan that identifies the skills that matter most for you, then work through them in one-on-one sessions and fit them into your training and competition plans.

Programs may include strategies and techniques to help you:

  • Relax under pressure
  • Improve motivation
  • Overcome setbacks
  • Manage sport performance anxiety
  • Use imagery to enhance performance
  • Build confidence
  • Stay positive when things don't go as planned
  • Set and achieve goals
  • Regulate arousal levels

…and become more mentally tough to achieve breakthrough performances.

How a program works

From first meeting to race day

Every program follows the same four stages, tailored to your sport, your level and your schedule.

  1. Initial consultation

A one-on-one meeting and mental skills assessment to understand your background, goals and current mental game.

  2. Your training plan

A mental skills plan that identifies the most important skills for you and the techniques to learn them.

  3. One-on-one sessions

Guided sessions to build each skill and fit it into your training and competition plans.

  4. Practice between sessions

Training plans and logs created with you, so the skills keep developing between meetings.

Short on time? Mental skills training should support your physical training, not take time away from it. Every plan is built around your schedule, and for some athletes that means as little as 5 minutes a day. Done regularly, it goes a long way, and it makes those precious physical training hours more effective.

About Lisa

Athlete, coach and mental performance consultant

Lisa Veloce (Perlmutter) is a mental performance consultant and professional member of the Canadian Sport Psychology Association, with more than 20 years of experience as both a coach and an athlete.

At the University of Western Ontario, Lisa competed on the varsity cross country, track and field and rowing teams and earned many academic and athletic honours, including Academic All-Canadian. Soon after graduating she took up cycling and climbed the Canadian ranks quickly on both road and track, winning three Canadian National Track Championship silver medals against internationally ranked athletes in her first year of competition. She was invited to national training camps and qualified to represent Canada at the 2009 Pan American Championships.

Early in her athletic career, Lisa came to appreciate how much the psychological side drives successful performance. That began more than a decade of research and education in the mental aspects of sport, leading to her MSc at the University of British Columbia in the Psychology of Exercise, Health, and Physical Activity Lab.

Her own competitive and coaching experience, including coaching junior, high school, Special Olympics and club teams, means she understands the demands athletes face across sports and levels. Lisa stays current with research so she can share the newest and most effective mental training strategies, and she consults with athletes and teams from recreational to international and professional levels.

Champions aren't made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them: a desire, a dream, a vision.

Doctors and scientists said that breaking the four-minute mile was impossible, that one would die in the attempt. Thus, when I got up from the track after collapsing at the finish line, I figured I was dead.
